Description

CASED & ENGRAVED Remington Model 870 ''D'' GRADE, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: 1984, SN: W462961V, Pump Action Shotgun, Choke: Full, 2 3/4'' Chamber, 30'' Ventilated rib barrel. This gun was purchased ''NEW OLD STOCK'' out of the Remington Factory Collection decades after it was originally produced. It was used by Remington as an exhibition gun, either simply on display or by their team of salesmen & exhibition shooters. It had been checked in & out of the factory by their salesmen team to take on the road to show the quality of the custom shop's work to potential buyers & was used to put on shooting exhibitions. Around 2012, it landed back in the custom shop under the care of Custom Shop Leader Shane Earl to be touched up & restored back to it's original glory. Don Talbot was Remington's last in-house engraver & he was about to retire. They wanted him to sharpen up the engraving & prepare it for further restoration. According to Don, the engraving he did on this shotgun was his last project before he retired. A member of Remington's visiting research & archive team saw the shotgun on his work staging rack while interviewing him for a forth coming book on Remington engraved guns & the engravers who engraved them. He inquired about its history, its proposed future & whether it might be for sale. After a discussion with the factory's management, it was determined after its restoration, it could be sold under their VIP program to the customer. The shotgun then spent nearly two years in the custom shop where the gun's surfaces were prepared & polished in the white ready for Don to sharpen the engraving. The gun then went to their top custom shop wood specialist Les Philips for wood restoration. Les after hearing who the gun was to be sold to decided rather than simply refinishing the old ''D'' grade wood, he'd craft an entire new set of Remington's highest quality wood for the gun. The gun received exhibition ''F'' grade quality wood, with fantastic feathered & rippled grain, hand checkering & was upgraded with a skeleton forend cap. The stocks received several coats of hand rubbed finish & was polished ready for assembly. By coincidence, this was also one of the last guns Les worked on as well, as he was also retiring & the custom shop as we knew it was closed shortly thereafter. The shotgun was then place in the custom shop's soft zip case inside a Remington Custom Shop hard case & sent to the buyer who has now consigned it to this auction. At the time of this shotgun's original production, Remington offered only ''D'', ''F'' or ''F'' grade gold engraving, with this being the ''D'' level engraving. This gun carries excellent scroll & border engraving over both sides of the receiver & the barrel. After its restoration, the gun has never been assembled outside the factory. The wood as described previously remains in mint condition. The factory metal blue finish rates 100%. Bore is excellent. The ventilated rib holds a small steel mid-rib bead & white front bead. The bolt is scroll engraved. The stock caries a correct period to the original production date, Remington ventilated recoil pad. Gold trigger. This is an absolutely fantastic custom shop shotgun, with an unusual history. It comes in the aforementioned Remington Custom Shop soft zipper case & hard case, in the original shipping box. Also comes with a copy of correspondence between the consignor & Remington Custom Shop employees Les Philips & Shane Earl. LOP: 14 1/4''.* FFL Req - Value: 5000 to 7000
