Description

Remington, Model: 1861 Rifled Musket, Cal: .58, MFG: 1865, S/N: None, Percussion muzzle loader, 40'' barrel. The straight wrist Walnut stock is very good with various small nicks, dings, scratches, & wear from use/age. Stock appears to have been lightly sanded in areas & oiled. There are two lightly faded inspectors cartouches on the left side of the stock above the trigger. The metal has all been buffed to a gun metal gray with areas of cleaned pitting & rust speckling. The barrel is marked with a ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagles head. The date marking on the top of the barrel has been buffed away & is not visible. The lock plate is marked ''1865'', American eagle holding wheat over ''U.S.'', ''REMINGTON'', ''ILION, N.Y.'', ''M''. The right side of the nipple bolster is marked with a American eagle holding wheat. All barrel bands are marked with a ''U'' on the right side. The trigger guard rear tang & rear sight base are marked ''R''. The hammer is marked ''M''. The rear barrel band screw has been replaced with a aftermarket screw. The bore is fair. There's pitting & roughness intermixed with thin rifling. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a two position, flip up, U-notch/aperture rear sight marked ''1'', ''3'', & ''5''. The stock carries a steel buttplate, that's gunmetal gray with areas of cleaned pitting. The upper tang is marked ''US''. The rifle has both sling loops & its cleaning rod. Originally Springfield arsenal was the only manufacture of muskets for the United states but with the growing demand & shortage of rifles from the civil war, production would be subcontracted out to many private manufactures, Remington being one of them. Remington would be contracted to make 40,000 model 1861 rifled musket's in 1864. even though the contract was for the 1861 model the improvements from the 1863 model would be implemented from the beginning of production. A very nice example of a Remington made, civil war musket. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
