Springfield Armory, Model: 1888, Cal: .45-70, MFG: 1892, S/N: 558006, Single Shot trapdoor rifle, 33 5/8'' barrel. The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with nicks, dings, scratches, dents, & wear from use/age. Stock has darkened from age & added oils over the years. Stock does not appear to have been sanded. The inspectors cartouche on the left side of the stock, & the Circle ''P'' in the belly of the stock are very faint & worn down, the inspector stamp more than the circle ''P'' stamp, but both are still visible. The top of the wrist is marked ''542'', ''M'', which could be a rack number or unit number. The metal has toned to a brown patina with areas of gun metal gray & scratches. The underside of the breech block has very faint remnants of case hardening. The lock plate has been buffed & cold blue has been added with two spots of gun metal gray showing. The barrel is marked ''V'', over ''P'', over a eagles head, ''P'', ''A''. The top of the breech block is marked ''U.S.'', ''MODEL'', ''1884''. The rear of the receiver is marked with the S/N. the lock plate is marked with a American eagle holding wheat, & ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Both barrel bands are marked with a ''U'' on the right side. The bore is very good. Its bright with areas of roughness/very light pitting. The barrel holds a replaced blade front sight with a Buffington rear sight. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate that's toned to a brown patina. No cleaning rods inside the trapdoor. The bottom of the buttplate is marked ''47'', while the upper tang is marked ''US'', ''T'', ''4'', which again is either a rack number or a unit number. The rifle has both sling loops & stacking swivel. Rifle comes with a after market leather & brass sling. Rifle has its unique rod Bayonet. A excellent example of a used 1888 Springfield with some extra interesting markings. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1600
