Springfield Armory, Model: 1888, Cal: .45-70, MFG: 1891, S/N: 522958, Single Shot trapdoor rifle, 33 5/8'' barrel. The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with nicks, dings, scratches, dents, & wear from use/age. The stock has a semi-pistol grip/hand stop add on, this one is a reproduction but is styled off the originals that could have been added to this rifle for match shooting. Stock has darkened from age & added oils over the years. Stock does not appear to have been sanded. There is a very faint circle ''P'' firing proof cartouche on the belly of the stock. The left side of the stock above the trigger is marked with a ''SWP'', ''1891'' in a box, inspectors cartouche. This is the inspector mark for Samuel W. Porter who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from September 1879 to June 1894. The right cheek is marked ''47''. The rear of the comb is marked ''B'', ''68'', likely a unit marking. The metal has toned to a dark chocolate patina with areas of gun metal gray, scratches. Areas of metal have roughness from cleaned very light pitting. The underside of the breech block has very faint remnants of case hardening. The barrel is marked ''V'', over ''P'', over a eagles head, ''P'', ''A''. All the barrel markings are faint & worn. The top of the breech block is marked ''U.S.'', ''MODEL'', ''1884''. The rear of the receiver is marked with the S/N. the lock plate is marked with a American eagle holding wheat, & ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Both barrel bands are marked with a ''U'' on the right side. The bore is very good. Its bright with areas of roughness & one spot of very light pitting. The barrel holds a blade front sight with the period correct add on sight hood, & a Buffington rear sight. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate that's toned to a brown patina. No cleaning rods inside the trapdoor. The upper tang is marked ''US''. The rifle has both sling loops & stacking swivel. Rifle comes with a after market leather & brass sling. Rifle has its unique rod Bayonet. A excellent example of a used 1888 Springfield with some extra interesting markings. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1600
