Description

International Harvester, Model: M1 Garand, Cal: .30-06, MFG: 1954, S/N: 5179525, Semi-auto Rifle, 24'' Barrel. The semi-pistol grip walnut stock is excellent with only minor nicks & dings. Top of wrist is marked in white paint ''36''. Bottom of wrist is stamped with a ''P'' in a square firing proof mark. The parkerized metal finish rates 75% on the receiver with wear on the edges & light thinning. The barrels metal finish rates 90% with light wear in spots. The rear of the receiver is marked ''U.S. RIFLE'', ''CAL. .30 M1'', ''INTERNATIONAL'', ''HARVESTER''. The right side of the barrel under the operating rod is marked ''SA 6535448 2 65 Y75 P M''. There is a line of red paint added on top of the rear receiver markings. Bore is excellent, its bright & mirror like with almost no visible wear. The barrel holds a wide blade front sight with protective wings, & the rear of the receiver holds a fully adjustable aperture rear sight. The stock carries a checkered steel trapdoor buttplate that has a cleaning kit/oiler bottle inside. The stock has both bottom sling loops with the stacking swivel. International Harvester was one of the 2 company's along with the Springfield Armory that started back up production of new M1 Rifles for the Korean War. In 1945, International Harvester bought the former aircraft factory in Louisville Kentucky, and converted it for manufacture of farm implements and refrigeration and air conditioning units. They did produce vehicles for the military in WW2 like trucks, tractors, & Half-tracks, but they never made weapons for the military or the civilian market. One of the major reasons the government selected IH to produce rifles was its Geographic location. At this time almost all production of M1 rifles & military arms was done on the east coast & within a radius of 60 miles. With the dawn of the atomic age it would be very easy to wipe out almost all arms manufacture with a nuclear attack on the eastern seaboard, crippling the manufacture of military arms. So the military wanted to spread out its military arms production leading to them choosing International Harvester. International Harvester produced the least amount of M1's with a total production of just over 337,000 rifles produced from 1953-1956. out of the over 5.4 million M1 rifles made, this is a very small quantity making them rare & collectable today.
