Enfield, Model: P-1871 Martini-Henry, Cal: .577/450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1885, S/N: None, Lever action single shot rifle, 33 1/4'' barrel.
HISTORY: The Martini-Henry was developed to replace the old Snyder breech loader, muzzleloader conversion rifles they had before & would serve with the British until 1889 when they adopted the Lee-Metford Rifle (the predecessor to the lee-Enfield's). The Martini rifles would go through many different upgrades through the years, this one being a Mark 2, one of the earlier ones. When the new stock of Lee-Metford rifles started coming in, Britan started to sell off & give out its stock of the Martini rifles to its Colonies like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, & especially India & Nepal, they would receive the majority of the old stockpiles, with the other country's martinis they received going to them later once they got better weapons. The markings on the stock & barrel, confirms it was given to Nepal as aid in 1894 & that's where it stayed until it sold on the US market.
CONDITION: the two piece, straight wrist wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, scratches & wear from use/age. The buttplate is proud to thew wood at the toe, it was caused by wood shrinkage over the many years. The right cheek of stock is marked with MANY different cartouches, a mix of British & Nepal (please see close up photo of all the markings on the stock). The blued metal finish rates 65% overall with areas toning to a brown patina & rust speckling starting to form. The lever has completely toned to a brown patina. The right side of the receiver is marked with a crown over ''V.R'', ''ENFIELD'', ''1885'', another crown over a downward facing arrow, & ''II.''. The left side of the receiver is stamped with British proof marks. The left & right side of the barrel have many other British proof marks. The left side of the barrel, under the rear sight is marked ''N.S'', ''N E P''. This marking means Native Service, Nepal, & was put on rifles that were going to Nepal straight from British arsenals. The bore is very good. Its bright with a few spots of roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped tangent/ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 100 to 400 on the base & 5 to 13 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate that's toned to a brown patina. Rifle has both sling loops & has its cleaning rod. Rifles comes with the reproduction, white leather British sling. A very nice example of a double country service Martini-Henry. Antique No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
