Stevens-Savage, Model: No.4 Mk.1*, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1942, S/N: 16C8238, Bolt action rifle, 25 1/4'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip, wood stock is very good as being cut down. The forend has hand etched checkering added. ''CAS'' stamped into the bottom of the wrist. There is a ''R'' stamped into the right cheek. The Dulite metal blue finish on the receiver has mostly faded/worn away with gun metal gray & spots of thinned blue. The blue on the barrel rates 70% with areas of wear & light rust. The left side of the wrist band is marked with the S/N, ''S'', ''B'', ''1942'', & a faint US ordnance flaming bomb stamp. The left side of the receiver is marked ''U.S.PROPERTY'', ''NO4MKI*''. The top of the barrel is stamped with various proof marks. The end of the barrel is marked with import marks. Bolt is S/N matched to the gun. The bore is very good. Its bright with very light wear. Bore is the two groove rifling. The barrel holds the front sight base but is missing the front post. The rear of the receiver has a two position, flip up aperture rear sight. The stock carries a aluminum trapdoor buttplate. There is nothing inside the trapdoor. Rifle has only one rear sling loop. Rifling is missing its magazine. During WW2 savage made just over 1 million rifles for Britain through the lend lease program, using Stevens facilities, since savage bought stevens in 1920. through this merger & many military contracts, Savage became the largest producer of arms in the United States at the time.
