Real Fabbrica D'Armi di Torre Annunziata, Model: M1870/87/15 Vetterli-Carcano, Cal: 6.5x52mm Carcano, MFG: 1889, S/N: ZV3183, Bolt action rifle, 33 5/8'' barrel. CAUTION DO NOT FIRE STANDARD 6.5 Carcano AMMO IN THIS RIFLE. In WW1 many of them were converted to the then standard issue smokeless 6.5 ammo for use as a second line rifle for the Italians, where they were not expected to shoot their rifle much if at all, so all they did was reline the bores to a 6.5 diameter with a barrel sleeve that was soldered into place. This process would later be called the Salerno Method after the armory where the conversions took place at in Salerno Italy. The re-lining of the barrel despite how it sounds, was determined to be safe by many other country's that used this style of conversion, if done properly. The main problem is that these rifles were made back in the 1870's & 80's, & were proofed for lower pressure black powder ammunition, not the newer small bore, higher pressure smokeless ammo. They could hold up to the newer ammo for at lease some time considering they were used, but they could blow up with extended use. Only specially downloaded ammo should be used in this rifle AFTER getting the barrel & action inspected by a licensed gunsmith. The striker does not cock back when the action is cycled & does not fire. Being sold AS IS with no RETURNS ACCEPTED. The straight wrist wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, scratches, & wear from use/age. The bottom of the stock, in front of the magazine is marked with a ''M'' stamp & has a small wooden dowl stock reinforcement. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''OT'', ''8127''. The metal has mostly toned to a brown patina, with spots of thinned blue remaining & also spots of added finish. The left side of the barrel is marked ''1889'', ''TORRE ANNUNZIATA'', ''N'', a faint crest, the S/N, & other proof marks. The bore is good. Has areas of roughness/ light pitting, but has strong rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a tangent, deep-V-notch rear sight marked 6 to 20. the stock carries a steel buttplate that toned to a brown patina with areas of cleaned pitting. Rifle has both bottom sling loops, & has its cleaning rod. A very interesting rifle that had a long service life, went through many conversions & has a unique history. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 100 to 500
