R.E.Terni, Model: M38, Cal: 7.35x51mm, MFG: 1939, S/N: R1517. Bolt action rifle, 21'' barrel. The straight wrist wood stock is very good with a few small nicks, dings, & dents. The left cheek of the stock, behind the rear sling bar is marked ''E'', ''9481''. There is a very faint, large cartouche on the left cheek of stock in front of the rear sling bar. The blued metal finish rates 90% on the receiver with only minor wear, & 80% on the barrel with spots of thinning & patina/rust speckling. The top of the barrel is marked ''SA'' in a box which is a Finnish military property mark, a crown over ''R.E.'', ''TERNI''. The side of the barrel are marked with the S/N, ''1939 XVII'', & other proof marks. The receiver band is marked with a few proof marks. The top of the rear sight block is marked ''CAL.7.35'' denoting that this is a 7.53 chambered rifle not a 6.5 rifle since both of the rifles looked the same & just chambered different rounds. The bore is good. Its bright with roughness & light pitting, but has strong rifling. The barrel holds a tall barleycorn front sight with a fixes, wide V-notch rear sight. The stock carries a blued steel, trapdoor buttplate. Buttplate has spots of wear & patina. Nothing inside the trapdoor. Rifle has both side sling mounts. Rifle is missing the bayonet lug. During the leadup to WW2, Italy developed a new cartridge that the military adopted for use with their main line infantry rifles, & the military designed the new M38 Carcano to use this caliber. A couple thousand of the rifles were made right before WW2 kicked off, & Italy saw the writing on the wall that there is a war coming. Italy quickly realized that switching to a brand new cartridge for the whole military right before a war was a terrible idea for logistics, so the new rifles were put into storage & they produced the new pattern of rifle just in the older 6.5 cartridge which they had a massive stockpile of & used those rifles, in combination with older pattern rifles. They would in turn sell the majority of the new 7.35 chambered rifles & ammo to Finland as war aid & used that money to make more rifles chambered in the 6.5 cartridge. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 100 to 250
