Description

SPECTACULAR & CASED SET, Devisme a Paris, French Dueling Pistols, CAL: 46, MFG: SN: 1110/1110, Percussion Single Shot Pistols, 10'' octagon barrels.

HISTORY: Louis-Franois Devisme was a true master of his craft. His apprenticeship with J-Louis Dedoudert, a famed worker of Nicolas Boutet, set the stage for his remarkable career. In 1830, Devisme took over Dedoudert's store, specializing in hunting weapons & exquisite pistol boxes. Initially established at 14 rue du Helder, Devisme later found his home at 26 Boulevard des Italiens, the address written on this very case. These dueling pistols are in exceptional condition & bear witness to Devisme's artistry. Elegance, precision & unparalleled craftsmanship combine in this extraordinary pair of French percussion dueling pistols.

MARKINGS: The top of the barrels are marked ''Devisme a Paris'' & the bottoms are marked ''No. 1110''. Both trigger guard tangs are marked ''1110'' above the scroll engraving. The lock plates of both pistols are marked ''Devisme a Paris'', bordered by intricate scroll engraving. Intertwined in the scroll work on the top tang & top barrel flat are matching numbers on each pistol ''1'' & ''2''.

CONDITION: The half-stocks, made of ebonized wood, feature intricately carved intaglio scrollwork panels, enhancing both the grip & aesthetic. There are blank silver shield initial plates behind each tang. The original high luster metal blue finish on the 10'' octagonal barrels have areas of thinning, toning to a brown patina. The grip caps, trigger guards, side & lock plates, hammers, barrels & barrel wedges are all intricately & tastefully engraved in floral leaf scroll. The amount of scroll work on these pistols elevates the aesthetic tremendously. The bores are very good & bright, with intermittent roughness & small areas of pitting amongst strong multi-groove rifling. The upper tangs hold small fixed rear sights & barrel ends carry post front sights.

CASE & ACCESSORIES: These pistols arrive complete in their original green velour-lined rosewood case. The lid itself is inlaid with brass banding & engraved brass panels. Inside the lid is a gilt-stamp reading: ''26 Boulevart Des Italiens/ Devisme /Arquerbusier Brevette.''. Within the case, accessories are abundant, including an ebonized mallet, cleaning & loading rods, nipple wrench, bullet mold & two ebonized round containers. In addition, this set is accompanied by a professional evaluation by M.S Rau Antiques. The consignor had this evaluation completed May 2024. The additional evaluation confirms the configuration, authentication & appraisal. We agree with the appraisal & have set the price accordingly. This set is believed to be worth $38,500 in todays market. With their rich history & quality, these rare dueling pistols stand as true masterpieces of their time. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 30000 to 40000
