Smith & Wesson, U.S Army Model 1917, CAL: .45 ACP, MFG: 1917-1919, SN: 140072, Double Action Revolver, 5 1/2'' barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with standard address & patent dates. The bottom of the barrel is marked ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY''. The left side of the barrel is marked ''S&W D.A. 45''. The left side of the frame above the trigger guard has a ''EAGLE HEAD'' over ''S9'' proof & there's a ''FLAMING BOMB'' proof in front of the hammer. There are multiple British Commercial proof marks on the cylinder, right side of the frame & caliber marking on the right side of the barrel. The butt is marked ''U.S ARMY MODEL 1917 NO 140072''. The original smooth walnut grips are very good & solid. There are a couple minor edge chips, alongside contusions, scrapes & dings. The right grip has a hand etched diamond in the right grip. The original metal blue finish on the barrel rates 85%. The frame rates 50%, with areas of thinning toning to a brown patina & concentrated loss on the front/back straps. Bore is good, consistently rough throughout with a grainy appearance. Integral U-notch rear sight & blade front sight. Lanyard loop present. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
