Manhattan Firearms Mfg. Co., 5-Shot Pepperbox, CAL: .28, MFG: circa 1850's, SN: 325, Double Action Percussion Pistol, 2 3/4'' barrel cluster. The left side of the hammer is marked ''MANHATTAN F.A. MFG CO NEW YORK''. Between two nipples is marked ''325'' with the ''3'' being worn smooth. The SN can also be found under the left grip panel. The wood grips are very good & solid. There are contusions, scrapes, dings& the wood has darkened from oils added over time. The frame displays simple decorative floral leaf engraving. The metal surfaces have an evenly worn to metal gray & toned to a brown patina. Bores are all good, fairly smooth, but appear grainy, with light pitting in some spots. No sights. The barrel cluster rotates when the trigger is pulled. All nipples in tact. The Manhattan Firearms Manufacturing Company was founded by a group of businessmen in 1856, anticipating the expiration of many Colt revolver patents in 1857. As the Colt patents had not expired when Manhattan Firearms began production, they first made other firearms based on expired patents, mainly single shot pistols & percussion pepperbox revolvers.
