Merwin & Hulbert, First Model Frontier Army Open Top, CAL: 44 MH, MFG: 1876-78, SN: 5265, Single Action Revolver, 3 7/8'' cut barrel. The revolvers that Merwin brought to market were probably the most advanced revolvers of their time, but Merwin, Hulbert & Company didn't actually manufacture any of them. The Hopkins & Allen Company manufactured these revolvers, all under Merwin's supervision. This example is a later variation of the 1st Model. It lacks the ''hump back'' hammer, but does display two screws above the trigger guard on the left side of the frame & the ball detent pin at the bottom of the barrel release catch. The revolver also features the desirable early Merwin features of ''scooped'' cylinder flutes & open top frame. Many of the earliest Frontier Army single action revolvers had orange & brown hard rubber grips that were very attractive & are highly sought after by collectors today. Merwin abandoned the use of these grips fairly early in the production life of the Frontier Army due to the expense to produce them. The original orange & brown checkered hard rubber grips are excellent, with only minor handling & storage marks. The barrel has fully worn to metal gray, with a thin brown patina & intermittent cleaned pitting. The original nickel finish on the frame is very good, with 85% coverage & consistent spotting/speckling with some areas toned to a brown patina. The top of the barrel is marked with the later half of the address stamp, while all patent dates are visible & legible. The left side of the barrel is marked ''THE HOPKINS & ALLEN Manufacturing Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A.'' with the first part of ''HOPKINS'' missing. Bore is very good & bright, with intermittent roughness & light pitting. Notch rear sight, no front sight due to barrel being cut down. Lanyard loop present. Although this revolver has been altered, it is still a good representation of an early Merwin & Hulbert large frame revolver. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
