Description

Colt, Model: M1911 U.S. ARMY, Cal: .45 ACP, MFG: 1918, S/N: 428295, Semi-auto pistol, 5'' barrel. The checkered, diamond, walnut grips are excellent ,with light finish wear & some smoothing of the checkering. The metal reblue finish rates 90% on the slide, 80% on the frame, with the frame toning more gray/brown as it thins. The left side of the slide is marked with patent dates, Rampant Colt logo, ''COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO.'', ''HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A.''. The right side of the slide is marked ''MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY''. The left side of the frame is marked with a eagles head over ''S5'', which is a Springfield armory acceptance stamp, & ''14'' on the trigger guard. The right side of the frame is marked with the S/N. The left side of the frame on a 1911 U.S. ARMY, with the eagle ''S5'' stamping, should aslo should be stamped ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'' on the left side of the frame. While the frame does show some buffing & polishing, including thinning of the eagle ''S5'' stamping in preparation for the reblue, it doesn't appear in our opinion that there was enough buffing to have removed the ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'' stamping. Removing of U.S. military proof & property stampings is not uncommon on U.S. Military owned guns, as for many decades it was generally illegal for civilians to possess 1911s clearly marked as US government property. After WW2 when the government finally allowed sales of these pistols on the surplus market, it became irrelevant. Some owners or possessors of these guns likely wanted to try & eliminate that trail of ownership or the military's right of retained ownership. It is therefore very likely that this stamping was removed & it was simply done very well or professionally. WWI ended on November 11th 1918, & since this pistol according to SN production records dates to 1918, there is always a small possiblity that this pistol did not receive the ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'' stamping even though it did receive the eagle ''S5'' stamping that should have been the final military stamping. It remains a mystery to us. The bore is very good & bright, with lightly thinned rifling. The slide holds a blade front sight, with a U-notch rear sight. Pistol comes with one period correct, two-tone Colt mag. This pistol appears to be a commercially sold M1911 U.S. Army, without the correct ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'' mark of a military used model.
