Description

Manurhin (French), Model: P1, Cal: 9x19mm, MFG: 1963-64, S/N: 226325, Semi-auto pistol, 5 7/8'' barrel.

HISTORY: The Manurhin P1 was part of a plan to arm west berlin police up to the standards of the Bundeswehr. Since they were the only armed German present in berlin, they wanted to be sure they were armed enough to function as a paramilitary support force, a front line if the eastern forces wanted to attack & take over the city, while the rest of the Western Allies were on their way. The only problem with that is that there was no German made guns allowed in the city, & everything the Bundeswehr was using was German made. The plan was to take west-German infantry arms, and in cooperation with French companies, who were shipped all the German made parts, then they assembled, stamped and proofed the guns and had them shipped on to Berlin by the French military. & just like that you have ''French'' versions of the German made guns. This was done with multiple different guns like the HK G3 which was done at MAS St. Etienne, & the Rheinmetall MG3, Walther MP-L, & P1 at Manurhin. When the gun started to show up, the eastern forces weren't fooled by what they did, but under the trade laws at the time, everything they were doing was legal & there was nothing they could do about it. Walther was already in close cooperation with Manurhin since they had manufactured the PP/PPK series for Walther since 1952. and continued to supply all the parts even after Walther was allowed to resume assembly in 1957. The P1 entered West Berlin service in 1963/64, replacing a wide array of WW2 era revolvers & pistols. About 15,000 pistols went to the police, customs, and corrections. The P1 pistol was used by the West berlin police until 1981 when the Sig P6 started to replace it.

CONDITION: the checkered, black plastic grips are very good with only light scratches & wear. The blued metal finish rates 90% with a few spots of thinning. The left side of the slide is marked with a dot in a circle proof mark, ''MANUFACTURE DE MACHINES DU HAUT-RHIN'', ''MANURHIN'' in a box in front of a gear, ''Made in France'', ''PISTOLET P1'', ''9MMX19'', & the last four of the S/N. the right side of the slide is marked with a crowned shield proof, which is a Paris Proof mark, & a Crossed Cannon proof mark, that has a unknown origin but is speculated to just be another proof from Manurhin, or to be a proof mark from leftover parts from a Portuguese contract. The front of the barrel lug is marked with another dot in a circle proof. The left side of the frame is marked with the S/N, another dot in circle proof, & the trigger guard is marked with the Berlin Sunburst (Berlin Rosette), which was a property mark for the west berlin police. CAUTION, this pistol still has its original thin slide that had problems with hairline cracks developing from extended use, or from using hotter ammo. Only lighter 9mm loads should be fired out of this pistol & it should be inspected by a gunsmith for damage before firing. The extractor on this pistol is also missing. The bore is very good. Its bright & mirror like with light roughness in a few spots. The barrel holds a tall, wide blade front sight with a square notch rear sight. Pistol comes with one mag marked ''P1''. With parts on this pistol missing, its being sold AS IS with NO RETURNS ACCEPTED. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 400 to 800
