Antique Japanese Wakizashi - Japanese short sword or ''companion sword'' in wonderful condition. These short swords could be carried at all times and places. 21'' overall and 14 1/8'' cutting edge, mounted in Shira Saya - a storage sheath, made from Japanese Magnolia wood in very good condition. The blade is Mu-mei - with out signature, and has a punched Mekugi-ana -hole in tang for bamboo peg that holds the handle to the blade, which is one of the indicators of the age of blade, The Nakago - tang, has unique crisscross file markings, not commonly found on Japanese blades. This Wakizashi is in excellent polish with very visible grain in steel form folding process and Hamon - temper line, with visible Ashi - short lines or dots of tempering, extending from patterns in the Hamon towards the cutting edge of blade. Solid one piece copper Habaki - a metal collar around the blade above the tang, that holds the blade securely in the scabbard and contains straight decorative striations. There are polisher's marks on the blade at Kissaki - the tip of blade and under the Habaki, indications of a nicer blade and accompanying polish. Estimated age is Shinto era 1680-1704. A very nicely preserved Japanese short sword. If you would like to preview these you will need to make an appointment before hand. - Value: 3000 to 6000
