Antique Japanese Katana in beautiful condition, 37 1/2'' overall and 27'' cutting edge, Mounted in Shira saya - storage sheath, made from Japanese Magnolia wood. This particular sheath contains Sayagaki - Japanese inscriptions written on outside edge of sheath, not seen very frequently which usually contains information on who made, where made, and other information such as age of the blade within. This blade contains signatures and inscriptions on both side of the Nakago - tang, some of which has been translated with swordsmith's name as: Bishu Osafune ju Yokoyama Sukemune Saku. This Katana is in very good polish displaying vivid forging grain in the steel throughout the length of the blade. A beautiful, flowing, wavy Hamon - temper line, that clearly shows Nie and Nioi - crystallization within the metal along the edge of the Hamon, typically visible only on higher quality Japanese swords, The Hamon continues to be visible at the tip of the blade, a mark of an excellent tempering and polishing processes. Polisher's marks are visible under Habaki and at the Kissaki - tip of blade. The Habaki - metal collar around the blade above the tang that holds the blade securely in the scabbard, is two-piece copper with Shakudo - ''raven copper'' a shining black patina consisting of gold and copper. This Katana appears to be a Bizen province blade and dated 1865-1870. If you would like to preview these you will need to make an appointment before hand. - Value: 6000 to 10000
