Exceptional Antique Japanese Katana. 38 3/8'' overall and 26 1/2'' cutting edge. Mounted in Shira-saya - a storage sheath, made from Japanese Magnolia wood. There are indications that this is a Tachi - ''great sword or long sword'' that has been cut down to Katana size over the years. This blade has been brought to Shinsa - a committee of Japanese sword experts that judges and completes paperwork on the sword, providing provenance showing the following: Blade is not signed, however the swordsmith is attributed to Ominokami Sukenao a higher ranking swordsmith who made this blade over 300 years ago. It was made in the Setsu province and displays a Gunomemidare temper line. Also included is an Oshigata - a rubbing of the blade's tang. There are 3 Mekugi-ana - the holes in tang for bamboo peg that holds the handle to the blade, which is one of the indicators of the age of blade and in this case that this sword has been cut down at least 2 times. Variations in the file markings in the Nakago - tang, also contribute to this conclusion. This blade has very fine forging grain in the steel and a straighter temper, along with fine Nie and Nioi - the crystallization within the metal along the edge of the Hamon - temper line, typically visible only on higher quality Japanese swords and that run along the edge of the Hamon which has the subtle Gunomemidare - along with irregular or ragged activity within. Copper one piece Habaki - a metal collar around the blade above the tang that holds the blade securely in the scabbard. Polisher's marks under Habaki and at the Kissaki - tip of the blade, are marks of a higher grade temper and polish on the blade. There are some very, very small chips at the tip of blade and along the cutting edge about 10'' from the tip, possibly from use in battle or duels, that would easily polish out. A very nice old blade made in the 1600-1700's with paperwork that is in itself difficult to acquire. This quality of Japanese swords are getting more and more difficult to obtain as many reside in museums and collections around the world. If you would like to preview these you will need to make an appointment before hand. - Value: 8000 to 12000
