US, Columbus Milpar & Manufacturing Co., M6 Bayonet & sheath. The blade retains most of its finish with areas of wear & brown patina forming. The guard & pommel are starting to tone to a brown patina. The top of the guard is marked ''U.S.M6'', ''MILPAR COL.''. The sheath has a green pain that was added all over it. The paint is worn away in spots to reveal rust underneath. The sheath has no visible markings. The M6 bayonet was designed to fit the M14 rifle. The army took the design of the M5 bayonet, added a muzzle ring instead of the gas plug stud, added a different lug catch to the rifle, & came up with the M6. the floating bayonet catch is very interesting. It was done to avoid changes in center of impact, & reduce shot dispersion during full-auto fire with bayonet fixed. This same design was on the T48 (FAL) bayonet, which the military was testing at the same time, & the army liked the idea. Basically the bayonet lug catch was under spring tension, allowing the bayonet to move forward (stay in place) when fired about 1/10 of a inch while the rifle recoiled backwards, then the spring return the bayonet to its original position. This same latch would be adapted to the M5 bayonet, making the M5A1. Grade: Very Good + - Value: 80 to 160
