Turkish, German Ersatz Bayonet & sheath. Bare metal blade with a few spots of patina. The handle is bare metal that's toned to a gray. Dark gray patina. The only marking is on the ''guard'' & is ''3849''. The sheath has finish wear & spots of brown patina. Ersatz (substitute) bayonets were made in Germany during the early years of World War I, because there weren't enough regulation bayonets to equip the rapidly expanding army. Ersatz bayonets were manufactured in local workshops, resulting in hundreds of variations. The German specification was for a 12-inch blade. In addition to newly-constructed bayonets, Ersatz Bayonets were also created by modifying captured bayonets of other countries. As time went on, these stop-gap bayonets were replaced by regulation bayonets and many went to Turkish forces. The Turks shortened many blades to 10-inches and shortened examples can be presumed to have been in Turkish hands. Most of these bayonets would have been originally made to fit Gew 98 pattern rifles & the Gew 88 Commission rifle, but with Turkish modifications they could fit a multitude of rifles, but the majority of them were converted, or stayed for the Gew98 bayonet lug, since that was the pattern Turkey was standardizing on. Grade: Very Good + - Value: 30 to 100
