German, Samson Werk, M1884/98. The blade is bare steel with lots of dark patina, the guard & pommel are the same. The wood grips have small chips & wear. The right side of the blade is marked ''SAMSON WERK'', & the spine of the blade is marked with a crown proof. Based on the M1871/84 bayonet for the Mauser Gewehr 71/84 repeating rifle, but has been modified to fit on the Gew 98 Rifle. The first production run was converted M1871/84 bayonets, while the second run was new made bayonets, that ran from 1915-18. M1884/98 production was discontinued in favor of the M1898/05 bayonet (the classic butcher blade WW1 bayonet) since the troops preferred that model. However, the Germans would return to the M1884/98 design in 1915, as a way to use their limited steel supply more efficiently. Grade: Very Good - Value: 80 to 160
