French, Shortened M1886 Lebel Bayonet & sheath. The blade has sheath wear. The guard & grip have light wear & light patina. The front of the guard is marked with the S/N that's two Stylized letters in front of ''657578''. The sheath has finish wear in spots & areas are toning to a brown patina. The sheath is marked ''B52474''. The M1886 bayonet was the French mainstay during WWI and many were still in service at the Fall of France in 1940. The Lebel also saw extensive use worldwide by native troops in the French colonies. The M1886 introduced the distinctive cruciform blade, which remained a feature of most French bayonets until 1956. there are three ''era's'' or versions that these bayonets are seen in. from 1886 to 1916, they had a Nickeled steel handle, a hooked Quillon, & the bayonet was just over 25'' long. From 1916 to 1935, they switched to a brass handle, & removed the quillon, many of the older bayonets had their quillons removed. The last era are from 1935 through WW2, where they shortened the bayonet to 18'' overall, by cutting down the blades, they also shorted the sheaths for the bayonets. This bayonet appears to be a 1916-35 production that was shortened later on. Grade: Excellent - Value: 100 to 300
