Description

ZANE GREY Winchester, Model 1894 TAKE-DOWN, CAL: 32 W.S., MFG: 1905, SN: 258173, Lever Action Rifle, 26'' 1/2 Octagon 1/2 round barrel, 1/2 mag.

Prominence: This firearm has an interesting history as it was once owned by famous Old West adventure author Zane Grey. Grey who idealized the American frontier, was a avid outdoorsman, hunter & fishing enthusiast. He loved to live that lifestyle & often wrote short stories about his adventures, as well the novels that made him famous, like his 1912 best selling book ''Riders of the Purple Sage''. Grey's son Loren claims in the introduction to Tales of Tahitian Waters that Zane Grey fished on average 300 days a year through his adult life. In addition to the success of his printed works, his books experienced second lives & continuing influence adapted for films & television. His novels & short stories were adapted into 112 films, two television episodes, & a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre. Grey apparently owned this rifle & utilized it on many of his hunts before gifting it to his friend & famous Rogue River guide Claud J. Bardon. Bardon was well know to have guided Grey on many trips down the Rogue, as Grey maintained a cabin along the banks of the lower Rogue. It was here that he exercised his love to hunt & fish & drew inspiration for his writing. Grey captured the river's essence in two books: Tales of Freshwater Fishing & Rogue River Feud. Local papers often reported on Grey's adventures for which Bardon served as his trusted guide & companion.

Bardon was born in 1885. During his life time, he guided many famous people including author Irving Cobb, motion picture man Earl Emlay & athletes such as Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees. Bardon lived a rather venturesome, rough & tumble life from catching a live mountain lion for the movies, digging for gold & buried treasure, & physically fighting over commercial & sporting fishing space. This rile became a constant companion due to the rifles ability to be taken down, so as to be carried in Bardon's backpack during his hikes & guiding adventures. Barden died in 1958 & the beloved rifle was passed down to his nephew Fred Popken. Popken later sold the rifle to Leo Oaks of Grants Pass. Oaks sold the rifle to Dave Hancock also of Grants Pass. The cosigner purchased the rifle from Mr. Hancock in 1979 & it has been in his collection for the last 45 years.

Condition:: The rifle features many special order features or upgrades from a standard rifle like the smooth capped pistol grip, 1/2 octagon 1/2 round barrel, double set triggers, upgraded sight package, & take-down feature. Bardon must have loved this rifle as it was well used during its many years of use while he guided, but was also well maintained. The original smooth capped pistol grip stock remains excellent, with a number of small contusions, scrapes & scratches to the original finish. There is a small reattached chip at the upper right shoulder of the stock where the wood meets the receiver. The metal finish has fully worn gun metal gray, but no pitting or rust. The bore remains very good, clean & with strong rifling. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman flip-up tang sight, while the barrel carries a 3 leaf folding rear sight (the middle leaf is missing the right side ear) & a short elongated Marbles Sheard front sight. The stock carries a crescent metal buttplate. The rifle appears mechanically excellent, with a tight smooth action. An all original & special take-down 1894 rifle, with prominence & history. FFL or C&R Req.

Accompanying documents: A 1979 Cody Winchester Factory Records Letter pertaining to the rifle & features. A two page hand written & signed letter from previous owner Dave Hancock explaining a bit of the history concerning the rifle & how it was gifted from Zane Grey to Bardon & passed to family & each subsequent owner of the rifle until the current consigner. A death certificate for Claud Bardon. Eight copies of vintage newspaper articles from the Ashland Weekly Tidings, The World (Coos Bay, OR), The Capitol Journal (Salem, OR), The Evening Herald (Klamath Falls, OR), Medford Mail Tribune (Medford, OR), discussing Bardon's adventures as a guide on the Rouge, some of which were while guiding Zane Grey. A letter from the Josephine Historical Society discussing Bardon's 1933 wedding celebration. & finally an original February 1926 Field & Stream magazine which includes Greys article ''Rocky Riffle on the Rogue River'' a story of steelhead trout. - Value: 4000 to 6000
