Description

RARE FACTORY CUSTOM SHOP EXPERIMENTAL Browning, Model A-Bolt, Cal. 300 BLACKOUT, MFG. MOD, SN: 99134ZX, Bolt Action Rifle, 18'' Round barrel, This Browning rifle has an interesting history. It was acquired several years back by firearms dealer off of Gun Broker. He recognized it as a very unusual A-Bolt configuration in a caliber Browning did not commercially produce in that model. Upon acquiring the rifle he initiated a call to Browning to find out the history of the rifle. They indicated they would have to do some research & get back to him. Very soon after he received a call from the ATF asking him to confirm the serial number & how he came to own the rifle. Upon relating the information, he inquired of their interest & they indicated the rifle had originally come out of the Browning R&D department & they were unaware of how it had left the Browning facility. With its peculiar departure from Browning, the dealer thought he might have to fight to keep the gun, but Browning did not try to recover the rifle as they could not exactly explain to the ATF how they were no longer in possession of it . There was some speculation by Browning that it was likely a gun sold at their head quarters in one of their employee discounted sale offerings & therefore they would have no claim to it. The dealer later showed it to the current consigner, who as a FFL dealer & Browning enthusiast, also recognized it as something unusual & special, & had to have it. Upon purchasing it, he also contacted Browning to find out more about the gun, at which point Browning was now very interested in reacquiring the rifle. However they were only able to offer a selection of current production firearms in trade. The current owner decided to keep the rifle, until its offering in this auction. The rifle carries a checkered, flat pistol grip & wide forearm synthetic stock, which is both excellent in condition & fit. The unusual stock's pattern mimics the wood grain of a high grade, high contrasting Circassian walnut. The stock carries a Browning sold recoil pad & sling studs. The rifle carries an unusual factory stamped SN, which is nothing close to a standard production A-Bolt, lending further credibility to the rifle being produced by the custom shop as a prototype or experimental R&D test rifle. The standard A-bolt rifle ended production in 1994 & the caliber was introduced by SSK as the 300 Whisper in 1992 & was later finalized in development in 2009 & introduced in 2010 to present. It is likely that Browning was testing the performance & possibility of producing a A-Bolt II or other Browning rifle in this newly developed caliber. The original matte black matching metal finish on the barrel & receiver rates 99%. There are no other markings on the barrel or receiver other than the SN on the receiver. The barrel is a 6 channel fluted barrel, with a threaded removable muzzle cap for potential application of a muzzle brake or silencer. The bore is excellent, basically mint. The top of the receiver has four open tapped holes where a scope once resided. No open sight provisions on rifle. The trigger guard carries the familiar Browning Buckmart logo. This is a rare & unique opportunity to purchase a likely one of a kind Browning experimental rifle in a caliber they never brought to market. FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 5000
