PROMINENCE: This rifle was gifted to & once owned by the World-famous Heavy Weight Boxing Champ Jack Dempsy. William Harrison ''Jack'' Dempsy, born on June 24, 1895 & nicknamed Kid Blackie'' & ''The Manassa Mauler'', was an American professional boxer who competed from 1914 to 1927 & reigned as the World Heavyweight Champion from 1919 to 1926. He became a cultural icon of the 1920's & remained a prominent sports figure & personality throughout his life. Dempsey's aggressive fighting style & exceptional punching power made him one of the most popular boxers in history. Many of his fights set attendance & financial records, including the first million-dollar gate. Dempsey ranked 10th on ring magazines list of all-time heavyweights & 7th among the top 100 greatest punchers. In 1950, the Associated Press voted him the greatest fighter of the past 50 years. The rifle was gifted to Jack at the height of his fame & during his championship reign in 1923, by his good friend Walter D. Hinds. Hinds was famous in his own right as a Sportsman, taxidermist & a bit of a socialite. He was from Portland Maine & had a famous hunting camp in Ox Bow. He & Jack shared a love for hunting & the outdoors, & hunted together on several occasions. This rifle was featured in The Remington Collector's Journal, along with a short article on Mr. Dempsey & a photographic two page spread featuring the rifle & some collectibles pertaining to his life.
