HEAVY WEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION JACK DEMPSEY's Remington, Model 8, marked .35 Rem Cal., MFG. 1923, SN: 48039, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel.
PROMINENCE: This rifle was gifted to & once owned by the World-famous Heavy Weight Boxing Champ Jack Dempsy. William Harrison ''Jack'' Dempsy, born on June 24, 1895 & nicknamed Kid Blackie'' & ''The Manassa Mauler'', was an American professional boxer who competed from 1914 to 1927 & reigned as the World Heavyweight Champion from 1919 to 1926. He became a cultural icon of the 1920's & remained a prominent sports figure & personality throughout his life. Dempsey's aggressive fighting style & exceptional punching power made him one of the most popular boxers in history. Many of his fights set attendance & financial records, including the first million-dollar gate. Dempsey ranked 10th on ring magazines list of all-time heavyweights & 7th among the top 100 greatest punchers. In 1950, the Associated Press voted him the greatest fighter of the past 50 years. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He died on May 31, 1983. The rifle was gifted to Jack at the height of his fame & during his championship reign in 1923, by his good friend Walter D. Hinds. Hinds was famous in his own right as a Sportsman, taxidermist & a bit of a socialite. He was from Portland Maine & had a famous hunting camp in Ox Bow. He & Jack shared a love for hunting & the outdoors, & hunted together on several occasions. When Jack would vacation from training & the ring, it was often as a guest at Walters camp or together on a hunting trip. On the left side of the rifle's stock Is a 1 1/4' by 2 1/2'' silver medallion engraved on 5 lines ''To My Pal Jack Dempsey From Walter D. Hinds 1923''. Dempsey loved the rifle & it accompanied him on many of his well-publicized hunting adventures, which he often did during his retirement & throughout his life. This rifle was featured in The Remington Collector's Journal, along with a short article on Mr. Dempsey & a photographic two page spread featuring the rifle & some collectibles pertaining to his life. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a fabulous rifle & sporting collectible, as owned by & often hunted with by one of the most famous Heavy Weight Campions of the world.
CONDITION: The original factory straight grip wood stock & schnabel forearm are excellent. There are very few minor scratches, scrapes or contusions to the excellent factory finish. The original metal blue finish rates 90%+, with areas of thinning starting to tone slightly plum. The barrel is fitted with a standard adjustable rear & Lyman blade front sight. Bore is excellent. The stock carries the rarer reverse tang crescent metal buttplate, with the tang at the toe. 4+1 shot fixed magazine. FFL or C&R Req.
