HISTORY: The M1903 rifle was designed after the Spanish American war when the US captured many M1893 Spanish Mausers. Th US realized even thought they won the war, the Mauser rifles they were facing were a superior weapon than the Krag rifles the US had. The US would take parts of Krag rifle, the Spanish Mausers, & the new German Gew 98 & come up with the M1903. The cock-on open bolt, 30'' (quickly shortened to 24'') barrel, the stock & the sights were taken from the Krag. The locking lugs, external claw extractor, and staggered-column magazine were taken from The Spanish Mauser. The bullet design (the early round nose & the later spitzer) & the third safety locking lug was taken from the Gew 98. The M1903 rifle took so many ideas from Mauser rifles that the company would go on to sue the US to the tune of $250,000 (about $7.5 million today). Mauser Werke had brought and won a lawsuit against the U.S. government for the M1903s use of Mauser designs. This did nothing to stop production, though settlement on the case was delayed for years. The ''AAHO'' marking on the stock means this rifle was inspected & repaired at the Augusta Arsenal, the ''OH'' is the inspectors Initials. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
