The left cheek of the stock is marked ''RIA'', ''EB'' in a box, & the right cheek is marked ''1986''. There is a set of four faint cartouches on the bottom of the stock Infront of the magazine. The parkerized metal finish rates 95% on the receiver & 90% on the barrel. Its bright with strong rifling but has a few spots of light roughness. The barrel is the early 6 groove rifling. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a receiver mounted, Fully adjustable aperture rear sight. The stock carries a checkered steel trapdoor buttplate, nothing inside trapdoor. The rifle has both sling loops with the third stacking loop. FFL or C&R Req.
HISTORY: Between 1941-42, Remington would start implementing simplifications to the M1903 rifle by replacing some milled parts of the rifle over to stamped in order to save time & money. They were small parts like the magazine followers, barrel bands, & trigger guards. Guns made by them or refurbished during this time could see a mix of parts. The military would adopt the M1903-A3 in may of 1942 & it would include all the simplifications done by Remington as well as replacing the rear sight with a aperture that was mounted to the rear of the receiver. Smith-Corona would get a contract to make M1903 rifles in February of 1942, but in May it was switched to the New 03-A3 model before any rifles could be made or delivered. They would make their first test batch of rifles in October & mass production began in November, a month ahead of Remington's initial delivery. There are three different barrels that can be found on 03-A3 rifles, The original 4 groove rifling, the later updated 2 groove rifling, & the High Standard/Savage 6 groove barrels found early Smith-Corona rifles (like the one on this rifle). Only a estimated 5000 6 groove rifling barrels were made, making them rare today. The ''RIA/EB'' marking on the stock indicates this rifle was inspected & repaired at the Rock Island Arsenal between 1946-58, the Inspector is Elmer Bjerke who was chief of small arms inspection at rock island at the time. The S/N being added to the bolt & stock means this was one of the rifles that we gave to the Greeks, these rifles were returned to the US & sold on the CMP in the 2000's. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 600 to 1200
