Description

Remington, Model: No.1 Rolling Block, Cal: .58, MFG: 1860's, S/N: None, Single shot rifle, 39'' barrel.

CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock is good, with some nicks, dings, scratches & wear from use/age. The stock has darkened from oils & age. The metal is a mix of gun metal gray & spots of brown patina. The upper tang on thew wrist is marked ''REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A.'', ''PAT. MAY 3D NOV. 15TH 1864. APRIL 17TH 1866''. The bore is very good. Its bright with thinned rifling & light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a three position flip up U-notch rear sight. The stock carries a surplus springfield steel buttplate marked ''US'' on the upper tang. Buttplate has rust & roughness. Rifle has both sling loops. Antique No FFL Req.

HISTORY: This is a rolling block that was built with a surplus .58 caliber Springfield musket barrel. After the civil war there were many surplus muskets coming on the market since the military was switching to breech loading cartridge guns. Remington bought many of these rifles & used the barrels off of them on rolling block rifle to save costs. They would be chambered in either .58 Berdan or .58 Roberts. Many of the barrels were relined to .50 cal & chambered in .50-70 government but some were left unmodified like this rifle. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 250 to 500
