EARLY Winchester, Model 1873, 1st model, .44 WCF Cal., MFG: Antique, SN: N/A, Lever Action Rifle, 24'' Octagon barrel, 3/4'' mag. The is an early first model 1873. The serial number is not visible due to raw hide coverage. However, based on the shape of the lever, dust cover & concealed trigger pin, the rifle was made before 1876. The rifle is not in operational condition, rather it is a wonderful relic of an era gone by. The rifle sold decades ago in a California auction & was previously part of the John Beckwith collection. The rifle is heavily rusted & the action no longer moves. The lever is bent & the top of the hammer was broken long ago during use. The side rails of the frame where the dust cover once slide, shows prying & distress from hand ejection of cartridges. It is missing the loading gate & the mag tube appears to have been shortened to 3/4 length. It has no rear sight & an altered front blade sight. The raw hide wrapping on the center portion of the barrel & mag appears to be extremely old, showing sinew threads of an early Indian period (previously identified as from the 1870's). The hide on the muzzle end slightly later. The hide wrapped at the wrist is of a thicker hide, which was likely necessary to support a break at the wrist & is possibly from a later period. The original buttstock is sun bleached & very weathered. The buttplate is missing, which was very common to Indian owned rifles of this vintage, as most were removed to make hide scrapers for buffalo & other game. The stock carries corroded & well weathered iron tacks. A few are broken off or missing & show a square steel shank, correct to the period. The Indians were known to have repeating rifles at the Battle of Little Big Horn & this being a 1st model probably pre-dating 1876, it's a rifle that was of that era & makes for a great story. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
