Marlin, Model 1881 Deluxe, marked 38-55 Cal., MFG. 1886, SN: 13294, Lever Action Rifle, 28'' Octagon barrel, Full mag. The original deluxe checkered & scalloped pistol grip wood stocks are fair. Much of the original checkering has smoothed due to heavy use. The forearm has a 2 1/2'' crack to the lower right side. The stock has a large 4'' broken chunk along the back of the comb, which has a few chunks nailed back into space, both original wood & an additional lighter toned piece of wood. There are numerous small scrapes, scratches & contusions. The metal surfaces have worn mostly gun metal gray, with a mix of spotty thin brown patina & remnants of original blue, mainly on the lower flats of the barrel. The receiver upper tang previously held a tang sight, with mounting screws remaining. Barrel carries an adjustable rear sight, with a replaced elevator & a Lyman half moon blade front sight. There are a couple of dents in the mag tube 1 1/2'' from muzzle. Bore is good, with some roughness amongst strong rifling. Stock carries a crescent metal buttplate. There is an open hole in front of the trigger under the lever. e action remains tight & smooth. The rifle has a well worn Old West esthetic & is an early era deluxe lever.
