RARE Mass Arms Co. Edward Maynard Patent, Model 1873, Cal. 40-40 Maynard. MFG circa 1880's, Antique, SN: 26053. Single shot lever operated tip-up rifle. 32'' Octagon/round barrel. Dr. Edward Maynard (1813-1891) was both a brilliant dentist & a gifted inventor. Born in Madison, New York, Maynard entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, but was later forced to resign due to poor health. Prior to the Mexican War, Maynard invented a mechanical priming system for use with percussion arms, which was intended to replace the copper primers that had been used almost since the invention of this ignition system. Perhaps Maynard's most significant firearms invention was his tip-up single-shot metallic-cartridge breech loading rifle, which he patented in 1851. The Maynard First Model carbine was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1856, which sparked the formation of the Maynard Arms Corporation during the following year. The Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, later undertook the manufacture of the Maynard rifles & carbines. The Massachusetts Arms Company continued to produce Maynard rifles until 1890. The smooth straight, grip walnut stock appear original & is good & solid, despite there being a 3'' crack repair on the left side of the wrist, which utilized three pins to stabilize. The stock has been sanded & refinished. There remains minor scrapes, scratches & dings, with the metal edges being proud to the wood. The buttstock carries a silver color upper tang metal buttplate. The metal blue finish on the barrel has mostly worn to a gun metal gray, with a thin brown patina & remnants of original blue in protected areas. The case-hardened receiver, lever & lower tang have all worn gun metal gray. Markings on left side of receiver are double stamped in 4 lines: ''Edward Maynard'' ''Patentee 1873'' ''May 27, 1851'' ''Dec 6, 1859''. Markings on right side of receiver are 3 lines: ''Manufactured by'' ''MASS ARMS CO'' ''Chicopee Falls''. The rifle mounted with a Vernier tang peep sight with elevation adjusting aperture base missing the aperture. The barrel carries a flip up two leaf rear sight & folding globe front sight. Bore is very good & clean, but with so areas of light roughness amongst strong rifling. Some of the screws show slot wear. Action is very tight, barrel to receiver has no play & appears to function well. Overall condition is very good, as all parts appear original & complete.* Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2500
