Remington, Model 8, 30 REM CAL (marked 30-30 Rem), MFG. 1909, SN: 16437, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel. Although this rifle fires a .30 Rem rimless cartridge, it carries the original early & rarer .30-30 caliber marking. Remington tried to utilize the 30-30 marking to take advantage of the popularity of Winchester's 30-30 caliber. They were quickly forced to change their caliber marking to .30 Rem on later examples, as these rifles would not accept the rimmed 30-30 cartridges. This makes this early caliber marked rifle much rarer than a standard marked 30 Rem. The original early cheeked & round knob pistol gripped wood stock is very good, having been sanded & nicely refinished. The metal is slightly proud to the wood in the areas of the wrist & receiver, with a thin bit of space between the wood & metal where it meets. The original schnabel forend rates good, having been more heavily & roughly sanded & has a lighter flat finish. There are minor scrapes & contusions remaining on the stocks. The original metal blue on the barrel has good coverage, but has thinned to about 50% density & has some small areas of rust pitting. The receiver blue rates 70%. Thinning areas are toning gray, with worn areas developing a thin brown patina. The barrel has standard adjustable rear & front blade sights. Bore is good, dark but with strong rifling. Stock carries the Remington plastic buttplate, with a small edge chip at the toe. 5 rd fixed magazine. Tight action. A fairly rare rifle due to the early 30-30 caliber marking. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
