Remington, Model 8, .300 SAV Cal, MFG. 1929, SN: 58998, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel. It is likely this rifle began life as a 35 REM caliber rifle. In 1936 Remington felt the model 8 needed a facelift & introduced the model 81, which was little more than a minor cosmetically changed model 8. A few short years later, in 1940, Remington released the model 81 in 300 Savage caliber. This caliber proved very popular amongst many big game hunters. As a result, some model 8 owners chose to return their rifles to the factory to have them swapped to 300 Savage. This was done with very little modification or adjustment to the rifle other than swapping the barrel for a 300 SAV barrel. The left side of the barrel shroud would have been stamped with a repair/upgrade code, which this rifle has, ''AUU3''. The original straight grip & schnabel forend stocks are very good. The stocks carry the original finish, but the forearm carries a thin added layer of finish due probably to much previous wear. The stocks have darkened some from oils & use. There are several minor to small scuffs, scratches & contusions to the wood & finish. The original metal blue finish rates 60% overall, with most of the finish wear to the carry points of the front of the mag, belly of the receiver & back portion of the barrel. There are several small nicks or abrasions to the back edges of the receiver & tangs. Bore is excellent. The receiver carries both a Redfield receiver tang sight & a vintage period scope on Weaver rings & Weaver quick detachable mount. The barrel carries a Marbles rear base & a Marble Sheard elongated front sight. Stock carries the bottom tang Remington UMC crescent metal buttplate, which has worn or been polished silver. 4 round fixed magazine. Tight action. A uniquely configured model 8 hunting rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 600 to 1000
