Remington, Model 81B (Deluxe or Special Grade), marked .300 SAV Cal., MFG: 1949, SN: 49246, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel, Remington's original 81 Special Grades were originally stamped with a ''C'' & referred to as ''C Grades''. Unfortunately, they were only available for the first 4 years of Model 81 production. During the onset of WWII, Remington found it difficulty acquiring English walnut from Europe & by 1940 the Model 81C was redubbed the Model 81B. This change meant the Special Grade was now delivered with a 20 lines-per-inch hand checkered stock & forearm of select American walnut. That is what is being offered here. On average, the ''81B'' cost approximately 12.5% more than the standard ''A'' grade rifle at the time. The original deluxe checkered & flat knob pistol grip wood stocks are excellent. The finish on the stock has been very nicely restored, but it is a bit more of a high gloss finish than what appears to be the original finish on the forend. The stock or LOP was either special ordered or was professionally shortened by about 1''. The inside of the forend channel ahead of the forend screw channel is stamped with a ''B'' for ''B Grade''. The stocks display hand checkering cut at 20 lines per inch. There are very few tiny handling mark to either one of the pieces of wood. The forend has a vacant hole where a sling provision was likely removed. Because these rifles were built to order & Remington did not use special receivers, the ''B'' marking was hand stamped next to the ''81'' on the roll stamped receiver. It will be a different point size than the receivers roll stampings. It may be slightly crooked, it may look out of place, but that's just the way they were done. The original metal blue finish rates a full 97%, with loss of rating due to some light spotting or speckling & some thin brush line scratches, both found predominately on the left side of the receiver. The receiver is fitted with a Lyman tang sight that while the barrel carries an adjustable rear sight, with replaced elevator & a Marble 34W front blade sight, with white bead. Bore is excellent, clean & bright. Stock carries the Remington checkered metal buttplate. 4 rd fixed magazine. Smooth tight action. A very rare & very nice ''B'' grade deluxe rifle, which is highly collectible. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1500 to 2500
