ULTRA RARE Remington, Model 81, .25 Rem Cal., MFG. 1936, SN: 1435, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel, What makes this rifle ''Ultra Rare'' is the caliber of .25 REM. While the caliber was a staple of the model 8 throughout its production, it was not a cataloged caliber for the model 81. When announced, the forthcoming model 81 listed the 25 Rem as a caliber for the rifle. However, by the time the rifle came into production & was cataloged the .25 caliber had been removed. Likely due to the fact that the .25 caliber was the least popular & least sold caliber amongst the model 8. There were a limited number of .25 cal barrels from the model 8 still in parts inventory & a very limited number of model 81 were special ordered with one of these limited barrels until supplies were exhausted with the first couple of years of 81 production. All factory authentic 81 rifles in 25 cal should carry a early production serial number & have early 81 production beavertail furniture. This is one of those very rare factory produced 25 cal model 81 rifles. Examples tend to bring large premiums amongst collectors.
The original factory flat grip wood stock & beavertail forearm are good & solid. However, they have been non-professionally heavily sanded & reoiled. The forearm was thinned so much so that much of the distinctive beavertail flats of the early 81 rifles have been removed. The rifle stock was also shortened by approximately 1'' & the original checkered metal buttplate recontoured to fit. There remains several minor to small scuffs, scratches & contusions to the wood. The original metal blue finish rates 80% on the barrel, 70% on the receiver, with the blue toning plum as it ages & thins. BTW, plum toning blue is not uncommon on the beavertail era 81's as the blue process that was used at Remington at that time has over the years rendered this plum coloring on a significant percentage of the rifles. The receiver previously carried a scope, as there are 4 additional screw filled hole on the left side from a previous scope mount. The barrel carries an adjustable rear & blade front sights. Bore is excellent. 5 shot fixed magazine. Although overall condition or originality is lacking, the rarity of this caliber in an 81 still renders this rife collectible & therefore an increased value.
