RARE Winchester, Model 1890 1st variation (Antique), Marked .22 SHORT Cal., MFG. 1891 2nd year production, SN: 3324, Pump Action Rifle, 24 1/2'' Octagon tapered barrel, This rifle has two very early features that not all 1st variation rifles possess. The first is the 24 1/2'' length barrel, rather than the later 24'' barrels. The second is the 1st barrel inscription sometimes referred to as the broken ''D'' inscription by collectors. The broken ''D'' refers to the fact that the ''D'' in manufactured is not complete due to a flaw in the roll dies. The dies were later replaced with a new set of dies producing the same 1st style inscription, but with a complete ''D'' stamping. These early features are discussed in detail in Ned Schwing's book 'Winchester Slide-Action Rifles'. The metal finishes on this rifle appear to have been very nicely & professionally restored. The original wood stocks are excellent & solid, retaining most of the original finish. There is some use wear & thinning at the wrist & several minor handling marks. The forend ring edges are still very sharp. The metal blue finish on barrel & mag was professionally restored to Winchester standards & rates 95%, with most wear loss along the flat edges of the barrel. The case-hardened receiver, hammer, trigger guard & crescent metal buttplate were also properly restored & re-hardened, all display strong & vivid case-colors. Bore is very good, Factory sights. Tight action. Extremely collectible early 1st variation, in short only caliber & with rare very early features. Beautiful antique rifle! Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
