Merkel Model 203 E, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: May 1971, SN: 57298, Sidelock O/U Shotgun, Choke: IMP CYL/MOD, 28'' barrels. Merkel over/under shotguns have been dominating the European market since 1924. Merkel is universally recognized as producing some of the finest post war shotguns in the world. The quality of their barrels, which were made in-house, are what most enthusiast point to as setting them apart. This shotgun has been professionally restored. The receiver exhibits beautiful full coverage, relief hand engravings of scroll & vines, with additional ornamental & border engraving. The original cheeked, checkered, & capped pistol grip European walnut stock & slender three-piece forend are excellent. The stocks have been cleaned, possibly lightly sanded in areas & reoiled. There is some dark oil staining on the left side at the wrist & back edge of the forend. They display very nice straight grain & color, with only a couple of very minor blemishes. The fine hand checkering has been sharpened. The raised edge & under contoured cheek has an elegant & hand carved level of craftmanship. The metal blue finishes on the barrels, trigger guard, lever, safety, etc. have been restored, rating 98% overall & starting to tone a bit plum on the barrels as they age. Bores are very good to excellent. The solid, matted rib holds a single front ivory bead. The buttstock carries a checkered plastic buttplate. Dual triggers. Factory sling provisions. LOP: 14 1/4'', to front trigger. DAH: 2 1/2'', DAC: 1 1/2''. A wonderful & high quality O/U shotgun. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
