The inside of the lock is marked ''R&W ASTON'', the lock & hammer are marked ''J.W.'', these are inspectors initials & names. The bore is poor. Has heavy rust & pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a brass buttplate. Stock has no sling attachments. Gun has ramrod.
HISTORY: the R&W Ashton mark is for Richard & William Aston, they were gun finishers & implement makers in Birmingham from 1845 to the 1870's. Aston was one of 8 Contractors to make 20,000 Pattern 1853 locks. This gun closely resembles the Northwest Trade guns that were sold by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), they were of this style & config. & has the serpent shaped side plate the HBC guns were known for. They imported guns from England & sold them to Native Americans and Euro-American trappers. They were known to trade beaver pelts for guns. The HBC began trading guns to Native Americans in 1670 & were in high demand in the 1700's to 1800's. The HBC's London office stopped requesting Northwest guns in 1912. Muzzleloader/Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1600
