Lane & Read, Fowler shotgun, Cal: .77 (10 Ga), MFG: Circa 1826-49, S/N: None, Percussion Muzzleloader, 28'' 1/3 octagon barrel. The checkered straight wrist wood stock is very good with small nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The wood around the buttplate is stained dark from oil. The metal has toned to a mixture of gun metal gray & dark patina. The top of the barrel & lock plate is marked ''LANE & READ. BOSTON.''. The rear of the barrel, upper tang, trigger guard, lock plate, hammer, buttplate, screws & ram rod escutcheon, all have intricate ornamental engravings. Some of the engravings are faded from wear. The bore is poor, dark with rust & pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with roughness & pitting scars. Stock has no sling attachments. Gun has ramrod. William Read was a full line sporting goods dealer selling guns produced in and around the Boston area, circa 1826-1880. the guns he sold were marked Lane & Read from 1826 to 1849, & William Read & Sons from 1850 until 1880.
