RARE, L.C Kersey, Over/Under Double Rifle, CAL: 40, MFG: 1870's-80's, SN: NONE, Percussion Muzzleloading Rifle, 31'' round barrels. Born in New York, 1827, Levi Charles Kersey was a gunsmith working for William Billing-hurst of Rochester, Monroe County, New York, 1855-1857. In 1874-1877, he was employed by Clabrough and Brothers of San Francisco. While there he made a target rifle for the well-known California telescopic (machine rest) target shooter, Dr. Pardee. With this rifle Dr. Pardee scored a 4 inch (string measurement) to the aggregate of ten shots at 220 yards, which was a rare accomplishment. In March of 1877, Kersey moved to Red Bluff, Tehama County, where he operated Kingsley's gun shop. October 1, 1877, Kersey rented Kingsley's gun shop for $15.00 per month and started business for himself. He made a double-barreled rifle for Kingsley for which he charged $25.00. This seems to be a small price of a double-barreled rifle; possibly part of the cost was traded for rent of the shop or some other debt. Kersey was last recorded at Red Bluff in 1885. (Ref: Sheldon,L.P. California Gunsmiths 1846-1900, Fair Oaks, CA; Far Far West Publishers, 1977). The original straight grip stock is very good & solid, having been lightly sanded & refinished at one time. There are a couple small fill & crack repairs at the top of the wrist, along with other minor scrapes & dings. The restored brown finish on the barrels is excellent, fully toned to a smooth brown patina. The top of the barrel is marked ''L.C.KERSEY RED BLUFF, CAL CAST STEEL''. The case-hardened side plates, hammers, trigger guard & buttplate all display faded, but visible case-colors, with areas worn to metal gray. Bores are excellent. Tang mounted peep sight, replaced rear sight & silver blade front sight. Case-hardened crescent metal buttplate. Double set triggers. Double ramrods. A peculiarity of L.C. Kersey rifles is that he mounts the cap box in the buttstock ''upside down''. This rifle has the box upside down & several photos of his guns show that this was the standard way he mounted the box. Most guns by other makers have the cap box mounted with the narrow end pointing toward the action. A neat double rifle with a history. Black powder, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 4500
