RARE!! John Bach of San Francisco California, Model: Plains/Buffalo rifle, Cal: .50, MFG: Circa 1850's, S/N: None, Percussion muzzleloader, 34'' octagon barrel, goes to round at muzzle.

HISTORY: John batch was a famed Gunsmith of target & hunting guns from the 1850's to 1900's. Born in 1824 in Buchenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He would move to San Francisco & would work as a gunsmith under Victor Maydat between 1852-53. In 1854 he went into business for him self. His first shop was a 52 Commercial street, he moved to many different shops as his business grew. He was known to always have excellent gunsmiths working for him, tow notable smiths are Frederick Hellinghaus, in 1858, & Alois Schnieder, from 1860-66. Bach displayed his personal made target guns at the Mechanic's Fair in San Francisco, in the years 1857 & 1864. the ladder year his gun was awarded the Premium for the best rifle. His target rifles were praised & highly sought after by the San Francisco Rifle shooting clubs, & hunters around the area. Bach himself Participated regularly in shooting matches & was a charter member of the national rifle club in 1872. John Bach was last listed in the San Francisco Directory at 28 Geary Street in 1874. in 1875 W.H. Schnieder (Son of Alois Schnieder wo worked with Bach) was listed at this address instead of Bach. John back would die on December 8, 1905 in San Francisco.

CONDITION: The checkered straight wrist, cheeked walnut stock is very good with three cracks on right side of stock, Infront of lock plate, & a few small cracks on left side of stock by side the plate screw. Spots of dark finish on buttstock & areas turned dark from added oils over the years. The wood has slightly shrunk over the years & the metal is slightly proud to the wood. Brass patch box in right cheek of stock. Iron furniture, German Silver Escutcheons for keyways on stock & cap of patch box. Silver medallion on left flat of stock stamped with the initials ''C.F.H.''. Barrel was left unfinished. All the metal has toned to a mixture of gun metal gray, brown patina, & light rust speckling. The upper tang & hammer have faint remains of case hardened finish in protected areas. The top of the barrel is marked ''J.BACH'', ''SAN FRANCISCO CAL''. The right side of the barrel is marked ''REMINGTON'', ''CAST STEEL'', this marking is worn/faded. The bore is very good. Its bright with a spot of light roughness/pitting. The front sight blade is missing, has the dovetail base still, barrel holds a deep V-notch, elevation adjustable rear sight. The stock carries a steel crescent moon buttplate, toning brown with patina. Rifle has ramrod. Double set trigger. A beautiful example of a antique, west coast Muzzleloader made by a esteemed gunsmith. Muzzleloader/Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 4000
