Springfield Armory, Model: Springfield M1795 Musket, Massachusetts Militia marked., Cal: .69, MFG: 1811, S/N: None, Flintlock Musket, 44 '' barrel.
HISTORY: The M1795 Musket was the first musket produced by US arsenals, Springfield & Harpers Ferry. It was heavily based on the Charleville Model 1763/66 which had been imported in large numbers & used extensively by the US during the revolutionary war & was the most numerus musket in Americas arsenal. It would continue to be updated & new models would come out. approximately 80,000 rifles were made at Springfield from 1795-1818 when the new model took over production. These would be used clear until the civil war & as Percussion systems became available, they were retrofitted with them. This rifle has the ''PM'' mark on the barrel which is the official acceptance mark of the Massachusetts Militia, thought to stand for ''Proved Massachusetts''. The rifle is a mix of models of parts, common as old parts would not go to waste. It has a type 2 trigger guard & a type 3 lock. With this rifle being 214 Years old, it is a tall feat that it still exists & still in intact condition. A nice piece of American history that is almost as old at the country.
CONDITION: the straight wrist walnut stock is good with small chips, dings, cracks, & scratches. stock has darkened from added oils. stock has shrunk over time leaving the metal proud to the wood around the buttplate & wrist. wood fill repair on the right of the wrist in between the lock plate & barrel tang. the left flat of stock, opposite of lock plate, is marked ''WESTPHAL'', likely the stock maker. The barrel channel on the stock is marked ''1811''. The metal has completely toned to a brown patina. Metal has multiple ding marks & cleaned pitting scars at the rear of the barrel. The markings on the top of the barrel are heavily worn & are just barley visible. The markings appear to read ''PM'', ''US 1811''. The lock plate is marked ''1811''. The eagle over Springfield marking is heavily worn but slightly visible. The bore is poor. It is dark with rust & pitting. The front sight is on the front barrel band, the stud at the end of the barrel is the bayonet lug. The stock carries a iron buttplate, toned to a brown patina. Rifle is missing the sling loops but has the ram rod. Antique, no FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 2500
