Description

RARE, Harpers Ferry, Model: M1841 Mississippi Rifle, Cal: .54, MFG: 1849, S/N: None, Percussion, 33'' barrel.

HISTORY: The M1841 rifle was the first standard Military rifle to use a percussion lock. It was more reliable & water resistant than the earlier flintlock system. It was easy to convert a flintlock to percussion so large amounts of them were converted. The M1841 got the name Mississippi rifle from the Mexican American war where Jefferson Davis was appointed Colonel of the Mississippi Rifles, a volunteer regiment from Mississippi. He would arm his men with M1841 rifles. Any unit at this time outfitted with rifles instead of smoothbore muskets was considered a special unit & they were designated as such. The M1842 would also see extensive use in the civil war, mainly on the confederate side. Starting in 1855, the bore was changed to .58 Cal to use the Mini Ball the army adopted & many older rifles were re-bored to .58 cal. The rifle was also modified to take a sword bayonet. The First rifles would have s simple fixed sight, this was later changed to a ladder sight with longer range. The rifle we have here escaped the 1855 upgrades & has the rare original Brass head ramrod that came with the rifle, most have been lost. It is very rare to find one of these rifles in all original configuration. This rifle came out of Virginia, the family had the rifle hanging over a fireplace since 1951, explaining the miss-colored brass. The previous owner from them, claimed it was used by a relative in the confederate army during the civil war.

CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with small scuffs, scrapes, & chips. Brass patch box in right cheek of stock. The inside of the lid is marked A.W.McC. in a cursive script, & 40 made with punch marks. The front of patch bx is stamped with a small P on the lower extension. The left flat of stock is marked with two worn cartouches, one rectangular & one oval. The left cheek is had carved I.JONES. The metal has toned to a dark patina with cleaned pitting scars by the percussion nipple. The brass of the lower wrist tang has a dark patina. The rear of the barrel is marked ''JPC'' over ''V-P'', the flat just below has a faint ''STEEL'' marking. The lock plate is marked with a American great eagle over ''US'', ''HARPERS FERRY'', ''1849''. The top of the buttplate extension is marked ''US''. The bore is good to fair. Its dark with roughness & spots of light pitting, but still has strong rifling. Seven groove rifling. The barrel holds a brass blade front sight with a fixed U-notch rear sight. The stock carries a brass buttplate. It has spots of patina. Rifle has both sling swivels, & a brass tipped ramrod. Antique/Muzzleloader, no FFL Req - Value: 2000 to 4000
