Description

Springfield Armory, Model: 1868 Trapdoor, Cal: .50-70, MFG: 1869, S/N: 710, Single shot rifle, 32 '' barrel.

HISTORY: this is the next model in line for the trapdoor Springfield family after the M1866. The M1868 was Springfields first attempt at making a separate receiver from the barrel, & to introduce new production 32 1/2'' barrels, the early production rifles still used relined musket barrels that were cut down (like the rifle we have here). These still used old 1863 musket locks. Since the barrel was shortened the middle barrel band was no longer needed & was eliminated. The sling swivel was moved to the front band because of that change. A new ladder rear sight was added over the flip up notch musket sights. Unique to only this model is the production year was marked on the breech block; all others were just the model number. Over 50,000 rifles were made between 1868 & 1870, with 1868 marked guns being extremely rare with only 150 produced.

CONDITION: the straight wrist walnut stock is very good with nicks, dings, chips, & scratches from use/age. The bottom of the wrist is marked ''X'', ''L''. the right cheek of stock is marked ''6'', ''S G''. the stock flat, opposite side of lock plate, is marked with four faint Inspector initials cartouches, they read left to right, ''ESA'', ''SWP'', ''FG'', ''ESA''. This is standard for M1868 rifles, two from when it was a M1863 musket, & two more from the M1868 conversion. The receiver & breech block have thinned remains of the blue finish but is mostly worn gray. The bare is bare steel & has patina speckling. The case-hardened finish on the lock plate covers about 50% of the middle, with the outsides toning to a brown patina. The left side of the receiver & barrel are marked with the S/N. the top of the breech block is marked ''1869'' over a eagles head, over ''U.S.''. the lock plate is marked ''1863'', the American great eagle, ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. The bore is good. Its bright & mirror like, but has thinned rifling & spots of roughness. Relined musket barrel. The stock carries a steel buttplate. Buttplate is toning to a brown patina. Rifle has both sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
