Springfield Armory, Model: M1873 Trapdoor blank firing movie prop., Cal: .45-70, MFG: 1882, S/N: 174548, Single shot rifle, 32 '' barrel.
HISTORY: This is a surplus trapdoor rifle that was bought by a prop house & modified by them to look more like a flintlock rifle but still fire blank cartridges. They could be seen with different amounts of modifications, some were left in their full length, & some were chopped down into carbines. This rifle has beautiful brass furniture. These were prominent in the movies The Man from the Alamo (1953), & John Waynes The Alamo (1960). Included with this rifle are two still photos from those movies were these modified trapdoors can be seen.
CONDITION: the straight wrist walnut stock is good. Has a 5'' tight repaired crack on the left side f the wrist. Large chunk of stock missing from the right side between the rear & middle barrel bands. The metal has a old re-blue & rates 85% overall with focused wear at the muzzle & sides of receiver. The top of the breech block is marked ''U.S.'', ''MODEL'', ''1873''. The rear of the receiver is marked with the S/N. the right side of the receiver is marked with a half-worn marking that appears to read ''HOP'', & ''897''. the left side of the barrel is marked ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagles heads, ''P''. the lock plate is marked with an American great eagle, ''SPRINGFIELD''. Hammer does not lock back. The bore is fair. It has roughness & pitting. The barrel holds the original front sight with another front blade on the front barrel band. The rear sight has been removed. The stock carries a steel buttplate marked ''US'' on the upper tang. The rifle has two sling loops & has a cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
