Winchester, Model: Hotchkiss 1st model 1879, Factory carbine conversion, Cal: .45-70, MFG: 1879, S/N: 338, Bolt action rifle, 24'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle started its life as a Full-length Military rifle. It was shipped from Winchester to the Army on June 6th, 1879. It was returned to Winchester on June 4th, 1881. Winchester converted it into a carbine on March 30th, 1882. Then shipped to a warehouse for sale on July 27th, 1882. Rifle comes with Winchester factory letter & Cody Firearms Museum Lookup sheet that confirms all dates.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is fair. The left side of the stock is charred from high heat or a fire. There is a 3'' tight repaired crack on the left side of the wrist. The left side of the forend cap has 2'' crack with a small piece about to chip off. There are no visible cartouches on the stock. The metal has mostly worn gun metal gray with areas of dark patina near the muzzle end of the barrel. The left side of the receiver is marked ''MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.'', two lines of Winchester patent Info, & the S/N. the bore is good. Its bright with roughness. The barrel holds a wide blade front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 2 to 4 & the ladder is marked 5 to 10. The stock carries a steel buttplate, has wear & patina. The rife has a sling ring on left side of stock. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 1500 to 3000
