HISTORY: The M1903 Mark I was designed to be used in conjunction with the Pederson Device. Designed by john Pederson it was basically a complete .30 Cal pistol that would fit in the bolt channel of a M1903 Springfield. This combined with the 40 Rd. mags it came with was planed to break the stalemate of trench warfare by essentially giving all the troops 40 Rd. semi-auto carbines, instead of 5 Rd. bolt action rifles. Soldiers would have replaced the bolt of their M1903 with the Pederson device before a big charge giving them much increased firepower. They were planned to be used in a big offensive in 1919, but the war ended before that. The rifles went back into service as standard M1903 rifle, & the 65,000 devices made before the contract was cancelled along with all the mags & ammo went into storage. They were declared surplus in 1931 & instead of paying to have them stored, they were destroyed. Only a few were kept as examples by the Ordnance Department as well as some that made their way out in intrigued officers pockets. Not many are know to exist to this day. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
