Description

Remington, Model: No.1 rolling block, M1868 Egyptian contract, Cal: .43 Egyptian, MFG: 1868-76, S/N: B35695, single shot rifle, 35 barrel.

HISTORY: Egypt would place an order of 60,000 No.1 rolling blocks in .43 Egyptian in 1868. Before the order could be delivered, Egypt (which had had close ties with the French since the Napoleonic excursions and the building of the Suez canal), ''defaulted'' on the contract so that a large part of the order could be sold to France, since they were fighting the Franco-Prussian war at the time & were in dire need of arms. Its estimated that 13,000 rolling blocks were delivered to France at that time. After the war ended in 1871, Egypt would place the same order again & the last of the 60,000 rifles were delivered in 1876. Remington was already making rolling block for the Spanish in .43 Spanish, but governments at that time considering it a matter of national prestige to field arms with proprietary cartridges, so Egypt wanted their own cartridge. It was based on the .43 Spanish cartridge.

CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist stock is very good. Stock has small nicks, dings, & scratches. Wood is worn in spots & metal is proud to wood in spots around the tangs & buttplate. The metal has worn gray with dark patina forming in spots. The upper tang is marked with a Remington two-line address, ''1864, &''1866'' patent dates. The inside of the tangs is marked ''B35695''. The left side of the barrel is marked ''B''. The barrel bands are marked ''B'' on the right side. The bore is very good. Its bright with light roughness. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Ladder is missing elevator & base is missing rear screw. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. The rifle has both sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 500 to 1000
