Kjobenharus Toihuus, Denmark (Copenhagen Arsenal), Model: M1867/96 rolling block, Cal: 11.35x51mmR Danish (AKA 11.7x51mmR), MFG: 1874, S/N: 43822, Single shot rifle, 35 '' barrel.
HISTORY: in the mid 1860s, Denmark was looking to update its military. Members of the Danish Ordnance Commission would visit the US looking for arms to by & they would end up at Remington. In April of 1867 the Danes placed an order of 10,000 Rifles. This was very important for Remington since it was the first major order of rifles since the American Civil War and Remingtons first major overseas contract. In August of 1867 Denmark ordered 10,000 more rifles & 1,800 Carbines. Again in May of 1868 there was another order of 10,000 rifles. The Danes also acquired the rights to produce the rolling block at the Copenhagen arsenal in Denmark. There is not as much production info of the Danish rolling blocks & the production numbers is thought to be between 40,000 to 70,000 rifles. After the 1889 adoption and introduction of the smokeless powder Krag-Jorgensen repeaters, the rolling blocks were freed up for alternative uses. In 1896, the M/1867 rifles remaining in inventory were withdrawn from infantry service, converted to utilize the new 11.35x51R smokeless powder centerfire cartridge, and transferred to fortress and coast artillerymen.
