RARE, Cosme Garcia Saez, Model: Faucet-breech rifle, Cal: .56, MFG: 1865, S/N: 81, Breech loading percussion rifle, 25'' half octagon/half round barrel.
HISTORY: Sr. Garcia Saez was a prolific Spanish designer. He would have many different patents & inventions including the first ever submarine, a stamp cancelling machine used in Spanish post offices, three kinds of breech loading guns, special inks, & many more. In 1864 he would patent his breech design in England & enter the rifle in the British breech loading trials. In the US, he was granted patent number 45,801 on Jan 3rd, 1865, under the name Cosme Garcia Saez, of Madrid Spain. This was for the breech chamber & the lever that allowed it to be tightened & sealed the chamber to the barrel. Spanish Firearms historian, Juan Calvo, reports that the Spanish Government approved the design & planned on building 500 Infantry rifles at the Armory in Oviedo, & issue them out for troop trials. The breech would end up being too complicated to be produced in Oviedo & would be contracted out to a Belgium firm. The rifles would be completed in 1865, but by this time the Spanish government was working on system to convert muzzleloaders into breech loading cartridge guns, making this rifle outdated already. Garcia Saez would have different variations of this gun created as he tried to sell it to other countries & on the civilian market. The 500 guns built for Spain were full stocked, had socket bayonets, & were marked crown ''AR'', ''O'' on the lock plate & crown over ''OVIEDO'', ''1865'', on the buttstock. The carbine we have here appears to be a rifle made for civilian sale.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good. It has small nicks, dings ,& scratches from use/wear. Both sides of the stock, by the breech block has a thicker layer of old finish that's starting to crack/flake. Stock has darkened from added oils over the years. Wood has shrunken slightly & metal is proud to the wood around the toe & lower tang. The metal is a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. Left side of the barrel is marked ''81''. The bore is very good. Its bright with a few spots of roughness. Four groove rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a notch rear sight. Stock carries a steel buttplate that toned brown. Rifle has no sling provisions. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 3000
